Why is nail biting so common and prevalent among Italian men? - is it common for grown men to have wett dreams

Nail biting is to say, usually a compulsive habit in children and young adults. However, it seems that everywhere I go in Italy, I feel fully adult males, ie, biting adults, to the nails. Whether by bus, train or just walking is easy to use two or more Italian men gnawing their nails to be identified. Now I am not sure whether to shake the hand of a man or not here.
